Cllr. Duff reported on the St. Patrick’s Day Parade which was extremely successful and he and his committee were complimented by his colleagues. There was serious criticism of the lack of cooperation received from Skycourt for this annual event which brought thousands of potential shoppers to the Shopping Centre. Cllr. McMahon reported that with the cooperation of Michael Leyden from Shannon Development Co. some initiatives would be tackled including the upgrading of the Shannon Website
Proposed by Cllr. Duff, seconded by Cllr. McKee and resolved; “that Shannon Town Council calls on Clare County Council to examine the possibility of making Street Name Signs vandal proof.” During the debate on this motion the consensus of the members seemed to consider that the damage to the Street Name Signs was being done by small children who did not realise the harm they were doing. However the debate gave rise to comments on deliberate vandalism constantly occurring throughout the town such as the numerous occasions on which the new Bus Shelters were deliberately damaged, the uprooting of directional signs and litter bins and anti social behaviour causing great concern to some of our elderly citizens living alone. Members encouraged members of the general public who might witness such behaviour and might feel intimidated by the anti social element to, in confidence, give information to the Gardai or to any member of the Town Council or to the Town Clerk so that appropriate action can be taken while protecting the identity of the informant

McMahon and resolved; “that Shannon Town Council ask Clare County Council to look at the possibility of putting a transfer station in Shannon for household items” The Town Manager in reply to this notice of motion said that the Recycling Centre Licence has been granted by the Environment Protection Agency and the licence would not cover the acceptance of ‘household items’ as described in the debate, however the Town Manager did inform the members that the acceptance of ‘green waste’ at the recycling centre is imminent
Proposed by Cllr. Flynn, seconded by Cllr. McCarthy and resolved; “that Shannon Town Council request the Roads Section of Clare County Council to design a safe Traffic Movement System to deal with the dangerous traffic hazard that exists at the junction of Bothar na Luachra and Tullyvarraga Road as the current crossroads has resulted in serious accidents.”
Proposed by Cllr. Duff, seconded by Cllr. Hillery and resolved; “that Shannon Town Council condemn the decision of the HSE not to provide the proposed 30 bed dedicated Cystic Fibrosis Unit at St. Vincent’s Hospital.”
Proposed by Cllr. Flynn, seconded by Cllr. Lambert and resolved; “that Shannon Town Council request the Minister for Justice to designate Shannon Garda Station as a District Station and in view of the recent Boundary Extension that sub-stations would be put in place to cater for the wider area.”
